Hi Guys,

I am not sure if you are aware but San Jose is hosting a grand prix this year on July 29th - 31st.

check it out

www.sanjosegrandprix.com

I have set up a group buy for purchasing tickets and I have enabled us to get 20% discount on tickets. So our prices for the event is as follows

Grand Stand Seating Reserved Seating (you get same seat all 3 days)
Gold $120
Silver $100
Bronze $60

Or General Admission tickets (no seating, you find a spot yourself)
3 day pass $48

1 day pass - different day different price
Fri July 29th $20
Sat July 30th $28
Sun July 31st $30

Here is the kicker... If we get around 70+ tickets (not hard if each owner buys 1 ticket for themselves and their significant other or friend) they will reserve a big spot for us to display our cars. They can fit us 50+ cars. What's cool is that the television crews and a lot of cameras will be rolling all three days, so lots of exposure to your car.

On top of that, if we can gang up and sell a lot of tickets, they will award us prizes.

No details on the prize but it could be several big prizes or an individual prizes for the club members who attend. Please post up if you're interested.

thanks
Nebo

Seems kind of pricey, what else can we or I do there?

nebolic
04-15-2005, 04:30 PM
therse vendors and booths, entertainment etc... kind of like the carnival except with lots of cars... if you find it too pricey, then you can just go ahead and buy a day pass, everyone can buy any of the above stated admissions. We don't all have to buy the same thing, the discount is good for all admission type.

As I've already mentioned, SCCA Solo2 will be recruiting volunteers to work the event, checking credentials and passes and the like. Work 1 day, get a free pass for the other 2 for you and a friend. (And help raise money for Solo2's site fund, too.) Signup info at http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/ when it becomes available.

the general admission you do not get a seat

for the reserved seating, you get your seat for 3 days in a row, same seat.

obviously gold will have best seats to choose
then silver has next best
and bronze has third best.

SCCA Solo2 is still looking for members and friends of members (membership not necessary) to help with credentials checking--making sure only people with passes are allowed into the pits, etc. In return for committing to working at least one full day (and since you'll be rotated around various stations you'll probably get to see some of the goings-on even while you're working) you'll get 2 free passes for you and a friend. You'll also get various other goodies: t-shirt, hat, etc. Moreover you'll help raise money for SCCA's Solo2 site fund, which aims to establish a permanent, dedicated local venue for auto-x (and other motorsports such as drifting).

Bump for SCCA access control workers; they still need people to help out on Friday and Sunday. Free passes, free hat and t-shirt, and you'll be working pretty close to where some of the action is (someone I met "volunteered" through the SJGP organization rather than the SCCA and ended up working the ticket booth ). SCCA membership *not* required. All the info and sign-up at: http://www.4d-sport.com/pages/758670/index.htm

Ah, so that was you.

SCCA workers will be controlling access into "no-man's land", the area between the K-wall (edge of the racetrack) and the spectator fence. So we'll have the best seats in the house for seeing the race cars go by. 8)

Awesome time there today. The whole thing got started pretty late due to some last minute construction, but once things were rolling it was great. Mike (DRFTR8) and I were doing pass control right at the pit exit...can't get much closer to the cars than that! We even had to bounce Papa Gushi out of the area since he had no pass or proper tags. ;)

I was working out by turn 5, where the SCCA fire/rescue workers were stationed so there was a big gap in the fence for their vehicle to come in, though which I could get a good view of the cars going by. Saw a number of cars spinning in turn 6, and one wipe out into the tire wall. (Also saw the drift Hachi Roku just tag the concrete barrier.) Later on we took turns minding the gate and watching the cars through a fence gap meant for photographers, next to the flaggers. Got to see the cars come through the turn 5 chicane, right towards the wall in front of me and then on to turn 6. The view was awesome; the cars were passing by at full speed just a few feet in front of me.

The organization and information for the event could have been better as there was a bit of chaos and confusion--people not knowing where they had to go or how to get there, that sort of stuff--but I'm sure things will be better tomorrow now that they've had a day to run through all the procedures and iron out the wrinkles.

as we were leaving we saw the viper club and ferarri club go out on track for some parade laps. how about doing a evo club thing? i think that would be pretty cool.

Brian (driver) suffered brake failure at 130mph during practice Friday which caused an unwanted meeting with a tire wall, luckily he managed to scrub off some speed and the car still managed to make it out there to qualify.

Had a great time there today....saw part of the Toyota Atlantic race and the Champ car race....they are damn fast. During the race the fastest guys were doing laps at roughly 56 seconds. The drifting expo was very cool and the crowd was amped up from that. Ran into one guy with a Works t-shirt on....saw the wide body MR in the expo....saw a blue Evo in the parking lot next to the wall....saw a black Evo driving in San Jose as I was leaving. My Evo didn't seem quite as fast on the drive home.

Yeah, it was great, but the view for GA tickets was pretty poor. Eventually, we decided to find a better place to watch, and saw that there were some people at the top of the parking garage. We figured that it was next to the car show, and a couple of guys I went with went through the "not an exit" doors and bolted for the garage. The rest of us didn't really think about running, so we just let the security guys kick us out. Later on, there was a private party that ended, and we just casually walked through it to the balcony, and got a really good view of the cars going by. Before we knew it, 50 other people appeared around us.

Next year, I'm going to call around and see if any of the hotels will guarantee a "race view" room. The people at the St. Claire had really great seats. :)

I had champ cars passing at ~100 mph a couple feet from my face (peeking through the K-wall at the apex of the Turn 5 chicane), and I didn't have to pay a cent. :nana:

Did "waterboy" duty today ferrying water out to various worker stations--I think I must have walked about 7-8 miles at least. Walking around the inside and outside of the track was tiring but I managed to snap over a hundred photos from trackside.

watch speedvision today and they were discussing the champ car in san jose.. i lost track on how many complaints the driver had with this event.. one major issue was the motorcross jump in the staight away, if you watch the race on TV you can see the cars catch air.. and also the other issue is the track being slippery.. cars sliding on one turn slamming into the walls...at the start they had a full grid but then it was 8 cars left.. alot of piss off drivers.. bad image for san jose

Man, that sucks. I was wondering about the small number of cars. When I was watching today, I saw the same cars over and over again, and thought that was a little strange!

here is quotes from two drivers... The concrete caught four drivers out. Another four cars fell out with mechanical failures on a track that literally shook the drivers teeth out. I have to say I've been driving motorcycles since I am two and a half, and I've never screamed like I was screaming on Friday, I can promise you that," said Oriol Servia.

Paul Tracy agreed, "Yeah, for sure it was bumpy. In terms of from the physical side of the track, it wasn't that physically demanding to drive. It was just rough. We put some pads in the car, put some rubber on the sides of the cockpit to stop me from banging my elbows and things like that on the sides of the tub."

our friend that ran his mini in USTCC has video of him hitting those tracks and getting 4 wheels in the air

Keep in mind this was the inaugural event--they'll do it better next year. (Though how they didn't foresee the problem with the tracks is beyond me--heck even my car is pretty uncomfortable going over them at just 40 mph.) Every track has its ups and downs--that's the nature of racing. Professional race car drivers aren't paid big bucks to drive tracks that are "easy". They've got their San Jose city circuit, we've got our Candlestick Park--talk about getting all four wheels off the ground, right Cameron? :)

I saw the race on SpeedTV and it looks as if there's no room for passing! The only passing I saw was on the pit lane where everyone pitted for the first time and Paul Tracy was running third until he beat Oriol Servia for the pit stop and got him 2nd place.

btw.. They don't just call it street circuit for nothing with all the bumpiness. Long Beach GP is the same way but with room to pass. :D

I don't think this was a bad image for San Jose at all. I thought it was a great turn out. This is the first time we've had this here, of course there will be some bumps in the road (pun intended). I think people are just too uptight and expect perfection.

Yes, it's great for the city. Now only if Honda and Toyota or even Mercedes comes back and starts supplying engines back to Champ Car, it would be much more entertaining for the fans to watch including myself. :D Boost is better afterall. :P

i was there Friday and Sunday. it was a rush to hear the Champ cars roar through the downtown streets of San Jose! so many people everywhere. i would definetly be there next year.
my boss used to race with some of the Trans-am Series drivers. we went into the convention center and kicked it with some of the racers and pit crew during the practices. it was good times.

I ended up just going to the qualifying on Saturday. I was only able to attend one day of racing so i picked that day so i could see the sport compact cars race and cheer my buddy Brett Erickson on in his GTI. Plus they had the stock cars and the trans-am cars too. But man I tell ya- what made it all worthwhile to me the most was hearing those champ cars go flying over the light rail track- that was soooo awesome.

I couldn't get one stellar picture becase of all the damn barriers tho, but then I expected that going in... Next year I will get a press pass. :)
