Does anybody know the maximum speaker size for the front doors without having to alter the doors or panels??? [cone diameter (4" or 5.25" or 6.5") and speaker depth]
Likewise do you guys know the speaker configuration for the rears??
I think it is a standard 6.5" Coaxial...
Thanks.

I put in 6.5" speakers in the front w/o any problems. However, I do recommend that you get weatherstripping to seal around the speaker and the door.

Matz,

Did you have to cut your factory grills to get the 6.5" in?
If not, why the weather stripping???

How deep were the 6.5" you put in?
If you give me the brand and model number, I can check...
Thanks for the info.

The factory opening is actually 6.75" opening. A lot of speaker kits will come with adapters to fit the hole though. If not you can buy them here:

I installed JL Audio speakers no problem:

I didn't have to do anything to the factory grilles. I just stuck them in. In general, you want a seal behind any speaker, as the voice coil is meant to be pushing against a cushion of air. If you don't have any seal, then there's no cushion. I imagine that's why some subwoofer boxes are fully enclosed. I don't know technical details about this stuff, but I am pretty sure it will sound better if you use the weatherstripping.

I put in Alpine SPS-170A.

The fronts are 6.75", too? I thought it was only the rears...

Sorry if I gave you wrong info.. I did use 6.5" speakers, though.

Yeah, they are the same size all around. Your 6.5 works because it came with an adapter and/or multiple bolt patterns on the speaker in the box. Like I mentioned, most retail packages will come with an adapter for 6.75 openings.

Those adapters I linked earlier will completely cover the speaker hole and seal it. It is made from a plastic material that is slightly flexible so it will mold to the hole when you tighten it down.

So the fronts and backs are 6.75"?
Or just the fronts?

ZK,
you put the JL VR650-CXi coaxials
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_components.php?comp_id=126
in the front and the rear?
If so, why go to some separates in the front like the OEM pieces?
Also how much clearance was there in the front?
The JLs are 2.44" deep; I am looking at speakers that are about 2.9" deep.

Both front and rear are the same - 6.75". I don't know about mounting depth.

Let me say first that I am not a car stereo guy. I just wanted something better sounding than the stock crap... There are audio systems in econo rental cars that sound better than the stock Evo stereo.

I put the same speakers all the way around and left the stock tweeters in. As for why I didn't go for seperates in front, I was lazy and didn't want to take apart the pillar and mount the crossover for the components. I am running off deck power and aftermarket components usually do not sound good off deck power. Also, I didn't know what size of tweeters I could fit behind the stock tweeter grill.

My whole stereo install was plug and play, no splicing, wiring or anything. It also makes returning to stock really easy.

2.9" deep would be pushing it. In the back there's not much problem as you have the whole trunk - but I don't know if it will fit in the door. 2.9" is pretty big!
