I just achieved a personal goal of mine which was to break 300 miles on one single tank of gasoline. The official number was 309 miles with about 12.8-12.9 gallons. That translates to about 23-24+ mpg. My freeway crusing speed was abouy 75-80 mph with AC on periodically.

I remember when i first bought the car I'd get about 214 miles per tank!

This is all possible due to my custom tuned ECUflash and the addition of an HKS DLI2, which I put in last week. Previously my miles per tank was about 280-290.

Took a photo to mark the occasion. Will post tomorrow when I can upload the pics. Thanks for reading!

Damn how are you hitting those kind of #'s? I drove freeway all day yesterday and was only able to manage about 220 on a full tank... But I did race in Sac yesterday and then drove home to SF averaging 80-90 mph.

how modified is your car? when mine was stock i got horrible gas mileage even on the freeway about what you are reporting.

I suspect my good gas mileage has to due with the scavenging effects of my camshafts/cam timing, my ecu tuning, upgraded ignition, and free flow exhaust.

Incidentally this was done on some cheap 7-11 Citgo 91 octane gasoline.

well when you car was new the motor wasn't broken in. iT can take up to 30K to fully seal the rings and witsu does have a rich stock top end RPM. But 300 miles a tank yea right maybe down hill the whole way with the clutch in

This is definately not something I'd lie about. In fact, anyone who's met me personally will vouch that I am one of the most straight forward no bullshit kind of guys around.

I take a lot of pride in the fact that I've been able to do this. I took pictures of the pump and my odometer is proof. No smoke, no mirrors. Just ECU tuning and parts optimization.

Yep Andy's a straight up dude! I as well as anyone else can back that up. He knows his shit!

Do you still have your wing on? *300 miles per tank is pretty good!

This is 100% highway right? That's believable.

I'm getting alot better mileage now that my 720's are scaled correctly. Avg about 20-21 city driving, and that's going WOT a bunch.

still have my wing on. mostly freeway. it takes about 5-10 mins from the end of university to 880 in the morning. the shop is about 2 mins off 880 to industrial blvd. no boosting grandma style driving.

Speed's the thing. At freeway speeds fuel economy falls off as an inverse-square function of speed, due to air resistance. You can easily get close to 30 mpg at a 65 mph cruise. My place to Lancaster is about 360 miles and I've driven there non-stop without the gas warning light coming on. So that's 360 miles in under 12 gallons, i.e. over 30 mpg. I've done it several times.

I have a TBE, HKS drop in and WORKS reflash. Do you have an XII or a IX. If a IX what kind of cams do you have?

it's funny, i was just reading something about drag and how that applies to power. it had some crazy stat that said it take 5 times the hp to move a car at 100mph vs. the same car at 50(i believe that was the starting speed). all due to the extra drag. makes you realize why aero is such a big deal.

Andy,

How are you actually tuning for closed loop when ECUflash doesn't have access to closed loop anything yet?

Is it just the proper injector scaling that is giving you better mileage?

EFIxMR

leaning out the low load portions of the map has effect on the mpg usage even though it is in closed loop. maybe whats happening is that the long term and short term corrections are biased toward a leaner mixture.

my injectors are currently stock. the 720's i was playing with was on a customers car, which originally used an SAFC, but the ECUflash just came out and we were going to see if the ECUflash could do a more refined job. Still need to work on that car a bit as it sometimes gets a p0171 code at idle. He has been very busy and hasnt had time for me to play with it.

very impressive andy! i wish i can squeeze that much outta my car. i get only a maximum of 22 mpg combined mostly city/highway (70/30).

awesome ;)

im with andy here...i drive from barstow to the bay to see the family and my gf and i actually do the calculations to get gas milage average and i get 24-25 miles to the gallon...and im pushing 317hp and 298tq so believe me i can get 300 miles to the tank...never ran the tank to empty though but with how many miles i drove divided by the gallons i put in i get 24-25 avg....

I dont' have the hp and tq that you claim but I also got more that 300 miles on a tank many times.* Like Tam said it's all in the speed you are mostly driving at.* Also you will get more mileage if you top off because you are putting more in the tank and makes it appear to got more mileage on a "tank" of gas.

yeah im just at 168mi and i have alittle more than half a tank.

When I drove home last month I hit 280-ish before I was going to pass the last real gas station for a while (King City) so I gassed up there. I put in 11.2G, which put my mpg at about 25. So if I would have burned another 1.6G to get to that 12.8 mark I would have been at about 320. I routinely hit 300MPT heading from Eureka south, but I generally keep it about 70 or so. And if there weren't so many mountains and sharp curves the milage would be higher (but the trip would seriously suck).
